The High Royds hospital opened in 1888 as The West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum. It was designed by architect J. Vickers Edwards on the broad arrow plan and opened in1888.
Built to be self sufficient the patients were expected to work to earn their keep on the site.
The High Royds closed in 2003. The hospital had become outdated and wasn't suitable for psychiatric care.
As of 2011 renovation of the site started and most of the estate is now residential. All that remains abandoned is the grade ii listed administration block. During my visit it was quite clear that work was imminent on this building too.
